I saw this post recently on the Suffolk County Freecycle Network:
>Message 15228 >From: "manthony18c" <manthony18c@yahoo.com> >Date: Sat Dec 25, 2004 >Subject: Offering..Adorable minilop bunny > >4 month old black female minilop rabbit with >cage and water bottle.. she is litter box >trained.. very friendly and clean..
I sent a polite email to the owner:
>moyesii wrote: > >Please make sure that this rabbit goes to a >good home. Too many "gift rabbits" end up being >abused or neglected after the novelty wears off >and the child or family grows bored of them. >Please be sure to adopt to a home that really >wants this rabbit and understands the enormous >responsibility that comes with adopting a pet. A >rabbit is a living creature and not a >disposable toy. Here is a link you should read: > >http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-7/brandolino-poem.html
Here is the pet dumper's reply:
>Subj: Re: Offering..Adorable minilop bunny >From: michael <manthony18c@yahoo.com> > >i do not appreciate your little lecture on >animal care and i'd advise you in the future >from sounding like an obnoxious extremist. the >rabbit will go to a good home and the novelty >does not wear off unless one has the attention >span of a gnat.
Unfortunately, in many cases the novelty does indeed wear off and many pets become victims of neglect and the "musical chairs" syndrome. Most pet dumpers are simply in denial about the harm and suffering that they inflict on these animals.

Here is an even more disturbing message that I found on the Freecyle group:

This man who made the post on Freecycle sounds unintelligent & arrogant & does not deserve such a beautiful creature... If it were not for people like yourself, politely standing up for the protection of animals, who knows where this poor little bunny may have gone to? Wish I would have seen this post on FREECYCLE, as I am a registered member. i know someone who takes WONDERFUL CARE & SPENDS QUALITY TIME & INVESTS A GREAT DEAL OF $$$ on her rabbits. I am sure he is taken by now though... Nevertheless, I agree w/you 100% & support you in your cause!

Aww, Thank you for those nice words of support. I'm glad to hear from others who feel strongly about this issue. All I could do was send an email to the guy, let him know that there are people who care about what happens to these animals.
It's very nice to have you here. Was getting lonely posting all to myself.

I went to FREECYCLE after I emailed you & found the OFFER from AnthonyM re: the Minilop. I knew someone that is especially fond of rabbits and would give this little bunny girl an excellent & loving home, but when I emailed him re: her and that I have a home for her, he never responded. I figure he may have found a home for the minilop bunny.
P.S. Great site & you are NEVER alone; you have your Higher Power & your Guardian Angels....

I had joined freecycle about a month ago and I had noticed your generous offer of cat food. I did not reply as I was not quite sure how this freecycle thing worked. But I did notice some pets being put up for adoption. I immediately started emailing people telling them pretty much what you said. To be careful and to do vet checks and if possible home checks and some other info. One person was not happy and replied telling me so AND reported me to the moderators... LOL!!! So th moderator emailed me asking me not to email people anymore. I apologized to them saying I did not realize that I was breaking on of the rules and from there we got into a nice chat about pets and the freecycle site. I was happy to hear that they do have someone who works in a shelter that moderates that site strickly for pets so she can help people be careful when adopting out animals. I felt that was a good thing since I heard other sites don't bother doing anything like that. Anyway... glad to see someone else had that same reaction I did. Good for you !!
moyesii do you do any rescue or anything like that ? I got more involved with animals about 3 years ago when I rescued aprox 25 cats and kittens out of my yard got them fixed, socialized them and adopted them out. I kept 2 of them. And there is a third living in my friends bedroom that I might end bringing to my apt to live. He was a cat I TNR'd but him and his sister got hit by a car. She died right away and he got a broken leg which he needed and got surgery for. Anyway.... LOVE this forum. Keep up the good work ! janet

Hi Janet, Nice to meet you and thanks for your comments! I don't consider myself a rescuer, but I do TNR feral cats when I find them in my yard. My own 3 cats were born feral, and now they live indoors. Unfortunately, my neighborhood just isn't very safe for cats. About 3 years ago, someone poisoned the feral cats in my neighborhood, and they all died. A year later a new stray cat arrived, but he got hit and killed by a car. And last year, my neighbors started feeding some ferals, which I TNR'd, but then they grew tired of the cats and had them removed. I don't know exactly what they did to them, because I no longer speak to my neighbors.
I admire the work you've done for the cats in your yard. I think that is where the responsibility has to start with everyone, and then we would be making real progress. Unfortunately so many people share the same mentality of my neighbors, which is that if it's not their pet, it's not their responsibility.
I'm not currently doing rescue, but I found that Long Island has a pretty strong network of cat rescuers, headed by Dr. Senk of the LI Cat Project. Do you know Gloria Wachholder? She's a rescuer in Patchogue, and she keeps all the rescuers in touch. Her email is glamourgirls2@hotmail.com

LOL you are so lucky I could not find my password and so by the time I emailed to get it I lost my original post...hehehe... it was sooooo long !!!
anyway... thank you so much for saving your 3 kittys from a life of being an outside feral. I don't consider myself to be a rescuer either because I have only TNR'd the ones in my yard and now one by job and dogs I have found I will stop for. But a rescuer I know keeps laughing at me saying "but you are a rescuer" and so we have a ongoing joke between the two of us. I say I'm not and she says I am.
Anyway, I have met Dr. Senk when I brought one of my two kittys to her for a third opinion on a problem. She was wonderful.
But I have never heard of that other person so thank you for that email.
I live in a renovated garage in a not so good area and my friend who is also my landlady, is relocating to Florida in June of 2007 and so this summer I have to relocate my 3 outside ferals. If I leave them here they will die. No one here wants anything to do with them and they are in fact in danger living here. Relocating ferals during the winter time is way way too dangerous so it must be done this summer. So all the connections I can make are great because so far I have no one wanting to take them into their house or into their existing colony or into their yard. I've been sick about it as I have been looking for the past two years with no success. Now its down to this summer and I have knot in my stomach. So say a prayer for them for me. I will have to touch base with that person and introduce myself.
There is so much education that needs to be done about the overpopulation of animals and the humane ways to handle that.
Good luck and keep up the good work. Would love to see pictures of your 3 furbabies. Can you start another thread and post them ?
and PS .... I LOVE ROSES !!! that has always been my favorite flower !!

HAHA Janet! I'm so sorry you had to retype your post, but thanks for taking the time.
I really hope you find a solution for your feral cats. Maybe someone will be able to foster them. I learned from a wonderful person on the Dave's Garden Pet Forum how to domesticate feral cats. This person has taken completely feral cats into her home, and with tough love and compassion she is able to integrate them into indoor life. So there is always hope for any cat. I will surely keep you and your cats in my thoughts and prayers.
I have plans to include a photo gallery on the site for my cats, but I will post a photo here since you asked and I don't know when I'll ever get around to finishing my site. I'd enjoy seeing your cats' photos as well, so feel free to post them here! Maybe someone will see the photos and take an interest in helping them.

yes i so agree that ferals can be domesticated. my mamakitty that lives inside with me and her son was an outside feral for 6 years and i socialized her. most of the ferals i socialized were between 4-7 months with my mamakitty being the oldest. she had never been touched in 6 years. however, i live in a renovated garage and there is no place to put any ferals i wish to socialize. i have two cats and since i basically live in one room even they have their terriortial squabbles. the one cat that was hit by a car is living in my friends bedroom since his surgery over a year ago. we actually had to install a screen door in her bedroom to make a small room with a window for this cat because one of her cats hates him. so even if she was nice enough to let me bring in more cats there is no more places to put them in her house. i don't have any family in new york so i can't even try to impose myself on them...lol... but i totally agree and wish i could find someone who had the room to take them in. i also have a cat that i have been feeding at my job and have been unable to find him/her a home too. i am going to have to trap him, vet him and re-release him on the property where i live unfortunately. i contacted that lady you gave me the email address for. we have had a nice little chat. she sounded hopeful about me relocating the outside ferals but we lost communication at the point where she was going to tell me why she was so hopeful...LOL!! kind of like getting to the end of a novel and not knowing what happened. i will have to re-email her to see what she has in mind. geez if she finds a solution she will be the only one i have spoke to in over 2 years that had a solution for me. i will have to hug her to pieces and then i will have to find you to hug you to pieces too !! LOL!! aren't you lucky ?!! hehehe.... well, thanks for listening to my feral kitty problems. maybe i will win the lottery so i can buy a house and all my kitty problems will be solved !! that would be great ! okay .... so all i have to post are pics of my two kittys living inside with me and my foster kitty living in my friends bedroom and one of one of the outside ferals AND the kitty by my job. i can't find a preview button on here so i hope these pics post okay. Beautiful cats! I really do hope you are able to find a home for the ferals. Maybe there is someone somewhere who can manage a few additions to their colony. It's a shame that your neighbors are apathetic, but I know how it is.
Here is a picture of my cat, Klimky, doing a backflip. I didn't train her. It's something that she started doing spontaneously when playing, and then her sisters also picked it up. I don't let them do the backflips anymore, because as they grew they started jumping so high that I became worried that they'd hurt themselves. Some people have said that it looks like she is trying to catch a football.

I have so many pictures of my cats (and not many good ones), but I can't choose which ones to post! This will take some time HEHE. I promise to post more pictures soon.
Please let me know how it works out with your ferals. It must have been stressful worrying about this for 2 years.
