James Galway and The Alnwick Rose are arriving to my garden this spring. I'm very much looking forward to seeinn them in bloom!

I was wondering how tall and wide they grow, and am also wondering about fragrance, especially for James Galway.

I've heard James Galway has a nice fragrance, even though not intensely strong. Do you like the scent?

Hi Krista,

James Galway is a great rose. It's very healthy, vigorous, and quick to establish. It can send out 8-10 ft canes that want to grow straight up. The canes are very rigid and difficult to train, so I'd recommend growing it on a tall, sturdy structure like an arch or fanned out on a wall. I tried growing it freestanding, but a few of the canes broke off after a heavy rain last year. I'm going to try to whack the canes back to about 5 ft this year. If you plan to keep the height in check by pruning, then it might not need any support.

The Alnwick Rose is susceptible to blackspot, and mine spends half the growing season without leaves so it's probably not a good indicator of the normal growth habit. But anyway my plant stays pretty compact at about 3 ft tall by 2 ft wide.

I don't think I've ever checked the fragrance of these roses. Can you believe that? I really should stop and smell the roses more often. Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks for the info. This will help me to decide on planting locations.

It will work out well that Alnwick is compact. The spot I have in mind for it is somewhat close to another rose. It won't have a lot of room to spread.
