I loved reading your Fall planting reports. I am curious as to any amendments you add to the soil when planting in the Fall? Anything to stimulate root development?

Hi Linderly! Thanks, I'm glad you found the report interesting. My soil is mostly loam, so I don't need to amend too much. I do add compost if the soil is very lean. Some people add bone meal, and I've used mycorrhizae before, but I'm not sure how beneficial it has been.
If you follow the same plan you use when planting your roses in the spring, you should be fine. Just don't fertilize.
In fall, the conditions are usually optimal for root development, because the soil is still warm while the air is cooler. The top of the plant goes dormant, but the roots continue to grow, which is the natural benefit of fall planting.

Sorry about that last post, but I wasn't sure if it would work or not.
I would like to commend the web admin personnel on a beautiful site! The roses are tremendous and I have enjoyed reading the posts.
I have one question for anyone though. I fell in love with the woodwork of The Hunter's Funeral Procession while in college. I couldn't find any information on it for quite some time until I stumbled upon your website.
I love this piece of artwork and am curious to know if a version of it is available anywhere to purchase. This may be my favorite piece of art ever and your website is headlined by it, phenomenal!
Thanks for your help and I hope everyone has a great week!

Hey Scott, Thanks for your comments. What I do know is that the original work is housed somewhere in the New York Public Library's art collections. I haven't been able to find any more information. When I contacted NYPL, someone suggested that it might be housed in the Music Collection of the Performing Arts Library.
I would also like to see this artwork more widely recognized and available in commercial form. It really has fantastic, beautiful imagery, and is one of art's hidden treasures. Maybe someday some enterprising scholar will bring proper recognition to this artist and his legacy.

Thanks for the response, and I completely agree with your impressions. I can't believe how scarcely known this piece of art is. I would love to know if any contemporary artist has reproduced it.
Surely the image you have on your website isn't a picture of the piece. Where did it come from? This has to be some form of reproduction right?

I planted a number of roses last fall, including some bands. I've been hoping that they will get a jump on spring growth, having successfully overwintered.
They look to be in good condition, as good as the spring planted roses.

Thanks Krista. I really appreciate the feedback. There's so much content that I have waiting to be added to the website -- write-ups, photos, blackspot reports -- but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's good to know that people are finding the information to be helpful.
I think you'll notice a huge difference between your fall-planted roses and the roses you plant this spring. I'd be curious to know what you think in June, so please keep me posted.
