The canes grow up and then arch over, giving the plant an elegant vase shape. With its tall stature and healthy foliage, it has a structural presence in the garden. In the first photo above you only see one harbinger cane on an immature plant, so the shape looks a bit awkward. This year it has really filled out nicely.
